Falls City, the county seat, stands on the north side of the Big Nemaha River and is named for the Falls of Nemaha, a rock ledge whose remains still show at the Old Nemaha river bend above Nemaha Falls Cemetery in dry seasons. Rulo is the Nebraska end of the US-159 bridge over the Missouri River, and it is named for Charlie Rouleau, the original owner of the town site. The village lies east of Falls City, so a truck crossing from Missouri reaches Rulo first.
Barada is a small village in the north-east of Richardson County, north of Falls City, named for the frontier folk hero Barada, who ran a trading post on the former Nemaha Half-Breed Reservation.
