Hiawatha is the Brown County seat and its largest city. Its main street, Oregon Street, is named for the Oregon Trail, and the parallel streets north and south of it carry tribal names, so naming the nearest cross street places you exactly. Hiawatha City Lake, a mile south of the city, is used for picnicking and camping, and the Davis Memorial stands in Mount Hope Cemetery.
Horton is named for Albert H. Horton, a chief justice of the Kansas Supreme Court, and is home to Horton High School for the South Brown County district. After the host of a CNBC business show toured the town, residents ran a Reinvent Horton campaign that brought new curbs, sidewalks and light poles and razed some buildings. It lies south of Hiawatha.
Everest takes its name from Colonel Aaron S. Everest, a Central Branch Union Pacific Railroad attorney who sat in the Kansas Senate for Atchison County, and it grew up after the tracks arrived. It lies south of Robinson and Hiawatha and north of Effingham, and its high school students go to Horton. Near Everest, name the road and the closest crossroad or farm.
Fairview sits west of Hiawatha and was named for its scenic setting. It is mostly a bedroom community for people who work or study in nearby Sabetha and Hiawatha, yet it keeps a post office, the weekly Fairview Enterprise and Curb Roller Manufacturing, which does business worldwide, along with local welding, electrical and plumbing firms.
Morrill was laid out when the St. Joseph and Western Railroad was extended to the spot, and it carries the name of Kansas governor Edmund Needham Morrill. It lies north-west of Hiawatha, with Falls City, Nebraska, to the north-east, and its students attend the Prairie Hills district shared with Sabetha. Name the road and say whether Hiawatha or Sabetha is nearer.
Robinson, on the Wolf River east of Hiawatha, owes its beginning to the railroad line laid across the area and its name to Charles Robinson, the first governor of Kansas; locals once called it Lickskillet. Its schools are now part of the Hiawatha district.
Towing in RobinsonPowhattan began as a stagecoach station called Locknane and was later named for the father of Pocahontas. It lies south-west of Hiawatha and west of Robinson, and the Kickapoo Nation School, a tribal school, is part of the community. Reserve takes its name from its site on a former Indian reservation and lies about 1.5 miles south of the Nebraska-Kansas border, north of Hiawatha. Willis grew from a Missouri Pacific Railroad station, and its high school, home of the Pirates, closed with school unification; it is now in the South Brown County district. Sabetha sits on the Brown–Nemaha county line and has more jobs than residents.
