Troy, the county seat, is the westernmost of the three US-36 towns and started out on the St. Joseph wagon route to Oregon and California. The Nelson Rodgers House, the first house built in Troy, still stands. Tell dispatch if you are out on US-36 or on a Troy street.
Towing in TroyWathena is the most populous city in Doniphan County, about 5 miles west of St. Joseph, Missouri, and it sits on US-36 between Elwood and Troy. It is named for Chief Wathena of the Kickapoo, and the St. Joseph & Denver Railroad reached it early on. Its schools joined Elwood's in the Riverside district. On US-36 here, say whether you are east of town toward the river or west toward Troy, and whether the truck is loaded.
Elwood lies west across the Missouri River from St. Joseph, which makes it the first Kansas town on US-36 after the crossing. It began as a trading post, is named for pioneer settler John B. Elwood, and shares the Riverside school district with Wathena. This close to the state line, say whether you are in Elwood on the Kansas bank or still in St. Joseph, and whether you are on US-36 or an Elwood street.
Highland is the county's college town: Highland Community College grew from the Highland University charter, the first college established in Kansas. It lies north-west of Troy, away from the river. K-120 comes up from Severance, meets US-36 at an interchange south of town and becomes Kansas Street at the city limits. The Native American Heritage Museum, built as a Presbyterian mission, stands east of town.

The small city lies south of Highland and west of Troy, inland from the Missouri River, and K-20 runs along its east border before bending east toward the K-120 junction. White Cloud sits on the Missouri River at the north end of the county, the westernmost Kansas city on its banks, and K-7 follows the river through town to the Nebraska line. It is the seat of government for the Iowa Tribe of Kansas and Nebraska; its entire downtown carries a National Register listing, and the Four-state Lookout looks out over the river valley.
