I-70 crosses the Kansas River and the bottoms on the viaduct, a run of bridges KDOT maintains that carries the interstate out of Kansas City, Kansas toward the line. There is almost nothing to pull onto, the mile markers reset underneath you, and a stopped tractor-trailer up there is a lane-closure conversation before it is a hook.
Two river-bottom industrial districts working behind the levees — Fairfax on the Missouri River bend off I-635, Armourdale inside the oxbow of the Kansas River. The BNSF yard at Argentine is the largest classification yard on that railroad's network, and the Turner Diagonal is the truck route that feeds it and the logistics parks built at its I-70 interchange. That puts loaded drop trailers and container chassis on private ground with gates, guards and no shoulder — access is what decides these jobs.
West out of the city, I-70 becomes the Kansas Turnpike at its eastern terminal, where K-7, US-24, US-40 and US-73 all meet it. K-7 and US-73 then run north along the western city limits. It matters for one practical reason: on the turnpike the emergency number is not the one that works on the rest of the Kansas side.

What we run is a heavy wrecker with rated rigging and WreckMaster-certified operators, which covers winch-outs, jackknifed tractors and uprighting on the large majority of these calls. A rotator earns its keep on a narrow set of jobs — a unit over the side of a structure, or a lift with no ground to work from. If yours is one of those, we will say so on the phone rather than arrive and find out in front of you.
Not that class of machine. Tracked earthmoving equipment travels on a lowboy and we do not haul on one. What we do move is skid steers, lifts, containers and yard machinery, along with the tractors and trailers that brought them in — which is most of what actually stops on the warehouse and distribution ground out along the Turner Diagonal.
