From that junction US-59 heads for St. Joseph, over in Missouri, and US-73 heads south-east for Leavenworth as part of the Glacial Hills Scenic Byway; north of town the byway follows K-7, and US-73 also carries the Lewis and Clark Trail designation. Inland, the county's other major highways are US-159, K-9 and K-116, and there is no interstate on the list. Atchison grew as a Missouri River port and railroad town, where the Santa Fe began and where grain elevators, flour mills and later a locomotive-parts foundry went up, and it has Benedictine College and two technical college campuses. Towing in EffinghamWest of Atchison and north-east of Effingham, Lancaster was platted in 1857, possibly named for Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and was an early contender for county seat. It grew as a station on the Missouri Pacific Railroad, and by 1915 it had a grain elevator, a lumber yard and a hotel alongside its stores and churches. Muscotah's name comes from the Kickapoo word for "prairie". The town was first platted north-east of where it stands, then rebuilt on the Central Branch Union Pacific line near the Delaware River once it was clear the tracks would pass just to the south. In 2013 its old water tower tank became the World's Largest Baseball Sculpture, in memory of Joe Tinker, and that is the landmark to give us if you are anywhere near town. Muscotah lies west of Effingham.
Huron is a very small city in Lancaster Township, north of Effingham and north-west of Atchison. It was platted in 1882, when the railroad was extended to that point, and named for Col.
