The county seat, Chillicothe, is served by US-36, US-65 and Route 190, with a US-36 business route through town. The Grand River flows just south of the city, and the Thompson River joins it to the south-west. The Hannibal and St. Joseph Railroad reached Chillicothe in 1859, and in 1928 the Chillicothe Baking Company began selling pre-sliced bread here, the first time sliced bread was sold commercially anywhere, which is why the city calls itself the Home of Sliced Bread.
Utica dates from 1837, the year Livingston County was organized, and borrows its name from Utica, New York. Chillicothe is a short way to the north-east and Breckenridge further west, and Utica's children attend the Southwest R-1 schools in Ludlow. With the county seat that close, describing your spot by its direction from Chillicothe usually works.
Wheeling sits on Route B just north of US-36 and a short way west of the Linn County line, with Meadville close by to the east and Muddy Creek off to the west. One of its first settlers came from Wheeling, West Virginia, and the town took that name when it was laid out in 1865. Chula stands on Cream Ridge at the west edge of the Medicine Creek floodplain, north-east of Chillicothe, and Routes K and V serve it. The old Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad line passes through town, the Livingston County R-III elementary school is here, and the name is Choctaw for "red fox." Say whether you are up on the ridge or down toward the creek, because that changes what a recovery takes.
Ludlow, in south-west Livingston County, is home to the Southwest R-1 school district and its Southwest Livingston County Elementary and High School. The village lies south-west of Chillicothe and south-east of Breckenridge, and it has had a post office since 1877. Folk musician Lena Hughes, the "Queen of the Flat-Top Guitar," lived here nearly all her life. When you call, say whether you came in from the Chillicothe side or the Breckenridge side.
W. B. Moore platted Mooresville in 1860 and put his own name on it; the post office opened the same year, and the village was incorporated in 1874. Meadville is over the county line in Linn County. Linn County does not get a page here, so Meadville is listed with Livingston. Route 139 runs through the town, just north of US-36 and east of Wheeling, and Parson Creek flows past to the west. The town was named for Charles Mead, superintendent of the St. Joseph Railroad, and has had a post office since 1869.
