Carroll County's seat, Carrollton, stands where US-24 meets US-65 in the south-central part of the county, with the Missouri River to the south. It was established in 1833 and won the National Civic League's All-America City Award in 2005. The Carroll County Court House, the Sheriff's Quarters and Jail, the post office and the Wilcoxson and Company Bank all carry National Register listings, and the courthouse is an easy landmark to give dispatch.
Route 10 runs through Norborne in south-west Carroll County, west-southwest of Carrollton and east of Richmond, with the Missouri River to the south. The Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe and the Wabash railroads both cross the town. It was founded in 1868 by Norborne B. Coates, a civil engineer for the railroad, and the Farmers Bank Building made the National Register of Historic Places in 1994.
Hale lies north-east of Carrollton and south-east of Chillicothe. The town was platted in 1833 and honors John P. Hale, a state legislator. Its school district, Hale R-I, takes in parts of both Carroll and Livingston counties, so a breakdown out here can fall on either side of that line; give us the county as well as the road.
Bogard began as Bogard's Mound, after a burial mound near the site that a pioneer named Bogard used as a lookout. The post office opened as Bogard Mound in 1872 and dropped the "Mound" in 1884, the year the town was platted. It lies north of Carrollton and belongs to the Carrollton R-VII school district. Named for Tina Gilchrist, a railroad official's daughter, when it was laid out in 1892, Tina is a village in north-east Carroll County, north of Carrollton and south of Chillicothe. Its post office is older than the plat, dating from 1884. The Tina-Avalon R-II elementary and high schools are here, and the school building is the obvious thing to mention when you call.
