Chillicothe, the Livingston County seat, is where two very different highways meet. US-36 here is the Chicago–Kansas City Expressway, with Route 110 signed on the same pavement, and along most of its length it is built to grade-separated interchanges, though a few crossings are still at grade. Business 36 carries the older line through town. US-65 is the other road, two lanes all the way from Marshall to the Iowa line, running north toward Trenton and south toward Carrollton. Route 190 finishes at US-65 on the north side of the city after coming in from Lock Springs across the Thompson River. Low ground lies south of town, where the Grand River passes and the Thompson joins it to the south-west. Chillicothe grew up on the Hannibal and St. Joseph Railroad, and the old track east toward Brookfield was abandoned in the early 1980s.
