Kingston has been the county seat since Far West was dissolved, and it keeps the Caldwell County Courthouse and a public square, with Shoal Creek north-east of the square. The town lies north of Polo's crossroads. The courthouse and Far West are both on the National Register of Historic Places.

The Milwaukee Land Company laid it out in 1887 beside the Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul Railroad and named it for Judge Daniel Braymer, a local banker. Cowgill lies west-southwest, just off Route 116, and Ludlow, in Livingston County, to the north-east.
Polo, in the south-west of the county, is built around the crossing of Route 13 and Route 116. Kingston lies to the north, Cowgill to the east and Knoxville, over the Ray County line, to the south. The town was laid out in 1867 and named after Polo, Illinois.
Towing in PoloKidder lies east of Cameron in the north-west of the county, with Kingston to the south. The Kidder Land Company of Boston laid it out in 1860 along the Hannibal and St. Joseph Railroad, hoping to draw European immigrants who did not hold slaves. The former Thayer College campus, later the Kidder Institute and then a public school, is the landmark to give dispatch.
Breckenridge is in the north-east of the county, west of Chillicothe, and dates from 1856, when it was laid out beside the Hannibal & St. Joseph Railroad; its name honors Vice President John C. Breckinridge. Its elementary grades and high school share one building, in one of the smallest K-12 districts in Missouri, and the town has its own public library.
