Water shapes the ground here. Trenton is built on the Thompson River floodplain, between the river on its west side and Muddy Creek on its east; the Weldon River runs past Tindall and Spickard; Medicine Creek flows along the east side of Laredo; and Sugar Creek skirts Brimson, with Crowder State Park to the south-east. Low ground beside those streams can stay soft well after rain, which can turn a straightforward tow into a winch-out. Trenton also has industry, including Modine Manufacturing's radiator plant, and a food plant there once made the city the world's largest producer of Vienna sausages. Trenton is Grundy County's seat and sits on the Thompson River floodplain, with the river to the west and Muddy Creek to the east. US-65 skirts Trenton's east side, and Route 6 cuts through the south of town. The Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad arrived in 1869, and North Central Missouri College, which began as Trenton Junior College, has its Barton Farm Campus directly south of town. Modine Manufacturing makes automobile radiators here.
On the Weldon River in the north of the county, Spickard lies along Route C just west of US-65, a short way south of the Mercer County line. It started out as Spickardsville, platted in 1871 by G. A. Spickard, and the name was cut to Spickard in 1892. On US-65 up here, say whether you are nearer the town or the county line.
Routes E and V meet at Laredo, south-east of Trenton, and Medicine Creek runs along the east side of town. The name is pronounced "la-read-oh," not the traditional way, and the Laredo R-VII district runs the elementary school here. Give the route letter you are on and which side of the Route E and Route V junction, and mention the creek if a vehicle has left the road on that side.
Out on Route 146 north-west of Trenton, Brimson is a village near the Harrison County line, with Gilman City further west and Sugar Creek along its south side. Crowder State Park lies to the south-east. W. G. Brimson, a railroad official, gave the village its name when it was laid out in 1898. If you are towing a camper toward the park, say whether you are still on Route 146 or already inside Crowder.
Strung along US-65 between Trenton to the south and Spickard to the north, Tindall has the Weldon River a short way to its west. The railroad's extension to this point in 1872 is what laid the town out, and it carries the name of Jacob A. Tindall, a Civil War officer. A truck stopped on US-65 here is easiest to find if you give your direction and say you are at Tindall.
