I-35 is Harrison County's main road. The north–south interstate runs along the east side of Bethany, the county seat, about midway between Kansas City and Des Moines, and the town has grown toward it since the interstate was finished in the early 1970s. US-69 and US-136 also serve Bethany, and Main Street runs from Highway 69 to the square. US-136 heads north-east out of town to Mount Moriah and on to Princeton in Mercer County. Ridgeway sits east of I-35 at the junction of Routes A and T, north of Bethany, and Gilman City is on Route 146 south-east of the county seat. Route 13 and Route 46 complete the county's list of major highways.

Bethany has been a trading town since the 1850s. Its industrial park, set up in the 1940s by the Harrison County Industrial Development Authority, has housed Calhoun Manufacturing, Lambert Manufacturing, Superior Waste and Tri-State Carports. Bethany Memorial Airport opened in 1944, and the 1990s brought motels and restaurants. Creeks and floodplain shape the rest of the county: Big Creek passes the west side of Bethany, the East Fork of Big Creek runs west of Ridgeway, Harrison County Lake supplies the town, and Mount Moriah sits on the Thompson River floodplain. Bethany, MO

Bethany was first called Dallas and was platted as the county seat in 1845. The Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad arrived in 1880; the last train left in the early 1980s. Big Creek, where an outcrop that once made a waterfall gave the Bethany Falls Limestone its name, flows past the west side of town. Route 13 ends on the south side at US-69 and US-136, and US-136 turns east downtown to cross I-35. The square, the industrial park and Bethany Memorial Airport are the reference points to give.

Ridgeway, MO

Ridgeway began as Yankee Ridge and took its present name in 1880, honoring an employee of the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad. It sits where Route A meets Route T, a short way east of I-35, with Bethany to the south and the East Fork of Big Creek running west of town.

Gilman City, MO

Gilman City is on Route 146 in the south-east of the county, south-east of Bethany and north-west of Trenton, and it extends into north-eastern Daviess County. It was platted in 1897 when the railroad reached it and named for Theodore Gilman, a railroad banker; the town grew until the railroad was taken out. The community of Melbourne lies to the east.

New Hampton, MO

New Hampton is a small city in the south-west of the county, platted in 1869 by Hampton Cox under the name Hamptonville; the post office has used the New Hampton name since 1881. US-136 runs through it on the way from Albany east to Bethany. The town lies north-east of King City and north of Maysville, so describe your spot by road name and your direction from New Hampton itself.

Mount Moriah, MO

Mount Moriah sits on the north-west side of US-136 at the west edge of the Thompson River floodplain, in the east of the county. Bethany is south-west along US-136 and Princeton, in Mercer County, lies east-northeast on the same road. The village post office, opened in 1867, closed in 1983, so use the highway and the river bottom as your reference points.
