US-73 follows the Missouri River side of the county. It runs north from Bonner Springs, where US-73 and K-7 reach I-70, the Kansas Turnpike, through Lansing and into Leavenworth, where it meets K-92. Through Leavenworth, K-7 shares the corridor with US-73, and K-92 carries traffic east onto the Centennial Bridge, where it becomes Missouri's Route 92. In the south of the county, K-32 follows the Kansas River through Linwood between Lawrence and Bonner Springs, US-24 and US-40 run together a little further north, and County Road 2 crosses the river at De Soto as the only direct road link to Johnson County. Around Basehor, give Leavenworth Road or the numbered street you are on.
Leavenworth and Lansing hold a lot of gated ground. Fort Leavenworth fills the northern half of the city of Leavenworth, which also holds the U.S. Penitentiary and the Disciplinary Barracks, and Lansing has the Lansing Correctional Facility; for a breakdown at any of them, give the gate as well as the road. Away from the gates, water shapes the county. Four creeks run east through Leavenworth to the Missouri, Stranger Creek drains south to the Kansas River, and Linwood moved north out of the river bottoms after the 1903 flood. Beyond the river cities, in Easton, Tonganoxie and Basehor, give the road name and your direction from the nearest town.

The Lansing Correctional Facility, formerly the Kansas State Penitentiary, sits in town, and a coal mine at the prison once made Lansing a shipping point. On US-73, give your direction and the nearest cross street; at the prison, say which gate.
Reuben and Ephraim Basehor laid out Basehor as a farming community when the railroad was completed in 1889; the town is north-west of Bonner Springs and south of Lansing. Leavenworth Road and numbered streets such as 155th and 158th are the names to give, and Basehor-Linwood High School makes a clear landmark.
Peruvian Connection has its headquarters in Tonganoxie, west of Basehor and Bonner Springs and north of Eudora, and in 2017 Tyson Foods dropped plans for a chicken processing plant there after residents objected. The town was platted in 1866 and named for a Delaware chief. Give dispatch the road you are on and which way you are headed from town.
K-32 is the main way into Linwood, on the north bank of the Kansas River near the mouth of Stranger Creek, since the Golden Road bridge over the creek collapsed and was never rebuilt. The town itself moved north out of 'the bottoms' after the 1903 flood. Say if you are in town, out on K-32 or down toward the river.
Governor Andrew Reeder renamed Eastin, laid out in 1854, as Easton after his birthplace, Easton, Pennsylvania. The small city lies west of Leavenworth and is served by the Easton USD 449 district. On the roads around it, the road name and your direction from Easton are what we need.
