Council Grove's Main Street is the Santa Fe Trail itself, and the town is named for the 1827 treaty signed with the Osage under an oak for the trail's right-of-way. The 1857 Hays House, the Post Office Oak, the Custer Elm and the old M-K-T depot on the 500 block of East Main Street are all in town. The Main Street block number, or Council Grove High School on Hockaday Street, will get a truck to you. US-56 reaches the town, and K-177 comes in from the south as Neosho Street.
A colony from Chicago founded White City in 1871 and named it for F.C. White, superintendent of the M-K-T Railroad's Neosho division; “New Chicago” and “Swedeland” were also considered. A second railroad, the Topeka-to-Herington main line, came through in 1887; it went on to become the Rock Island and belongs to the Union Pacific system today. The town's pre-K through grade 12 Rural Vista school fields the Huskies. K-4 runs through the town.
Dwight owes its start to the Chicago, Kansas and Nebraska Railway, built through the area in 1887; the line later became the Rock Island and is now part of the Union Pacific. The town is named for Dwight Rathbone, who owned the original town site, and it was incorporated in 1903. Its own schools closed through unification, so Council Grove High School is the district high school. K-4 runs through Dwight, and K-57 ends at its junction with K-4 here; the town lies south of Manhattan and south-west of Wamego.
Incorporated in 1871, Parkerville took its name from pioneer settler Charles G. Parker. Its post office opened as Parkersville in 1870, dropped the extra s in 1892 and closed in 1953. The town lies south of Manhattan, in the same corner of the county as White City, and belongs to the Rural Vista school district. With few landmarks in town, tell dispatch whether you are nearer White City or Council Grove and which road you are on.
Dunlap sits near the Neosho River, north-west of Emporia. Joseph Gage Dunlap, an Indian agent for the Kanza, founded it in 1869, and it grew after 1878, when Benjamin “Pap” Singleton brought Exoduster families to form Singleton's Colony. The post office closed in 1988, and the Dunlap Colored Cemetery, also called the Exoduster Cemetery, joined the National Register in 2018.
