Shawnee County is Topeka and the Kansas River valley around it. The river runs east across the county just north of center, and most of Topeka lies south of it. I-70 crosses the county through the capital and meets US-75 there, and US-40 rides along with I-70 to the west. The Kansas Turnpike comes up from Emporia as I-335, follows I-470 through Topeka and leaves to the east on I-70; the East Topeka Interchange is where the turnpike, I-70, K-4 and the Oakland Expressway come together. West of the city, US-24 keeps to the north side of the river through Silver Lake and Rossville on its way toward St. Marys.
Away from the interstates the county changes quickly. The western edge turns hilly toward the Flint Hills in Wabaunsee County, the Wakarusa River rises in Auburn Township in the south-west, and Soldier, Mission, Indian and Shunganunga creeks run under the roads on their way to the Kansas River. Lake Shawnee in south-east Topeka has campgrounds, so campers and travel trailers are part of the traffic on city streets as well as the highways. Forbes Field, now Topeka Regional Airport and an Air National Guard base, is south of the city near Pauline. When you call, give us the road and which side of the Kansas River you are on; north of it, the township name (Soldier, Menoken, Silver Lake or Rossville) narrows it down.

Topeka is the state capital and county seat, on the Kansas River where I-70 meets US-75. I-470 and I-335 carry the Kansas Turnpike through the city, K-4 and the Oakland Expressway tie into it at the East Topeka Interchange, and US-24 heads west toward Manhattan. Topeka Regional Airport, the old Forbes Field, is on the south side.

It was built on the Kansas River's north shore, but the river has since moved its channel to the south of town. The highway through it was first paved as a two-lane road and carried US-40 before it became US-24, and more of the town now commutes on it into Topeka.
Auburn sits in the south-west corner of Shawnee County, in the Wakarusa River valley, and the county's highest ground is there. The Kansas Turnpike passes just south-east of town without an exit; the nearest one is north-east in Topeka, so help for a truck stopped on the turnpike near Auburn comes from that end. The town began on the old California Road, and the railroad later passed it by.
Rossville is the next town west of Silver Lake on US-24, up in the north-west corner of the county and north of the Kansas River. A road bridge over the river ties it to Willard on the south bank; the Great Flood of 1951 brought the earlier bridge down and left the two towns cut off from each other for years. The town was founded in 1871 and named for William W. Ross.
Willard lies west of Topeka on the south bank of the Kansas River and runs over the line into Wabaunsee County. It grew into a railroad town and cattle shipping point once the Topeka-to-Herington line came through, later part of the Rock Island and now run by Union Pacific. The Great Flood of 1951 wrecked much of Willard and brought down its road bridge to Rossville, which had to be rebuilt.
