Manhattan is the center of Riley County's road map, built where the Big Blue River meets the Kansas River in the Flint Hills. I-70 runs south of the city, and three exits lead up to it: K-177, which runs north as Bill Snyder Highway to the Kansas River viaduct; McDowell Creek Road; and K-18, which comes up past Ogden and Manhattan Regional Airport. US-24 comes in from Clay Center, runs across the north of the city past Tuttle Creek State Park, enters as Tuttle Creek Boulevard and turns north-east at East Poyntz Avenue for Wamego. K-113, Seth Child Road, links K-18 and US-24 across the west side.
Kansas State University and Fort Riley, the Army post between Manhattan and Junction City, put a lot of people on these roads, and big events at Bill Snyder Family Football Stadium and Bramlage Coliseum add more. Downtown Manhattan sits on the floodplain where the two rivers meet, which flooded in the Great Flood of 1951 and again in 1993, and Tuttle Creek Lake to the north is a state park that draws campers. Riley County has no elected sheriff; the county police department does that job, so a county police officer, not a deputy, may be the one at a wreck outside town. Manhattan, the county seat and home of Kansas State University, grew on the floodplain where the Big Blue joins the Kansas River and now spills over into Pottawatomie County. US-24 runs through it as Tuttle Creek Boulevard, K-177 comes in from I-70 over the Kansas River viaduct, and K-18 runs west past Manhattan Regional Airport, with K-113, Seth Child Road, tying it to US-24. Aggieville, downtown and Manhattan Town Center are reference points worth giving us.
Ogden sits south-west of Manhattan on K-18, near Fort Riley on the road toward Junction City, and takes its name from Major E. A. Ogden of the Army engineers, who helped build the fort. It briefly won the county seat in 1857, until Manhattan proved that votes had been cast illegally. Beyond Ogden, K-18 turns south to meet I-70.
Grandview Plaza is just over the line in Geary County, which has too few towns in our area for a page of its own. It lies south-west of Manhattan, was founded in 1963 and belongs to the Geary County school district. Junction City is the county seat, Fort Riley covers ground in both Geary and Riley counties, and Milford Lake is in Geary County too.
Give us the exact exit you are nearest, because all three lead to Manhattan by different roads.
