Where the warning triangles go when your truck is stopped on the road
Turn on your hazard flashers immediately, then place three warning triangles as soon as possible and within 10 minutes. On a two-way road: one 10 feet behind the truck on the traffic side, one 100 feet behind, and one 100 feet ahead. On a divided highway all three go behind, at 10, 100 and 200 feet. Near a hill or curve, move one back as far as 500 feet.
The rule, in plain terms
Where warning devices go when a commercial truck stops on the road is set by federal regulation, in 49 CFR 392.22. The same federal rules require a commercial motor vehicle to carry them in the first place: three bidirectional emergency reflective triangles are the standard kit, which is why every properly equipped truck has a case of them behind the seat or in a side box.
The rule has two steps. First, the moment the truck stops on the traveled part of the road or on the shoulder for anything other than ordinary traffic, the four-way hazard flashers go on, and they stay on until the triangles are out. Second, the triangles go out as soon as possible and in any case within 10 minutes. The regulation measures distance in paces as well as feet — 4 paces is roughly 10 feet and 40 paces roughly 100 feet — because nobody on a dark shoulder is carrying a tape measure.
On a two-lane or undivided road
When traffic can come from both directions, you warn both directions. Place the three triangles like this:
- Triangle one: 10 feet behind the truck, on the traffic side. About 4 paces back from the rear, toward approaching traffic, marking the edge of the truck that traffic will pass closest to.
- Triangle two: 100 feet behind. About 40 paces back, in the center of the lane or shoulder the truck is occupying, facing traffic coming up behind you.
- Triangle three: 100 feet ahead. About 40 paces in front of the truck, again in the center of the lane or shoulder it occupies, warning traffic approaching from the other direction.
On a divided highway or a one-way road
On a divided highway, traffic only reaches you from behind, so there is no point putting a triangle in front of the truck. All three go behind it instead, in the center of the lane or shoulder the truck occupies, with the farthest one pushed back to give faster traffic more warning.
That means one on the traffic side within 10 feet of the rear of the truck, one at 100 feet, and one at 200 feet. Every interstate around Kansas City — I-70, I-35, I-29, I-435, I-635 — is a divided highway, so this is the placement most drivers stranded in the metro actually need.
Hills, curves and anything that blocks the view
The distances above assume approaching drivers can see the triangles and the truck in good time. When the truck has stopped within 500 feet of a curve, the crest of a hill or some other obstruction to the view, that assumption fails, and the rule moves the warning back: a triangle goes out in the direction of the obstruction, somewhere between 100 and 500 feet from the truck, far enough to give other drivers ample warning before they come around the bend or over the rise.
In practice, think about where a driver first loses sight of the road ahead of them. The triangle needs to be visible before that point, not after it. If you have stopped just past the top of a hill, the warning belongs on the approach side of the crest, not beside your bumper.
Setting them out without getting hit
Walking back along a highway shoulder is one of the most dangerous things a driver does, and the triangles do not help anyone if the person carrying them is struck. A few habits make a real difference.
- Flashers first, vest on. Hazards on before you open the door, and a high-visibility vest on before you step out, especially at night or in rain.
- Get out on the side away from traffic if you can. Climbing down into a live lane is how drivers get hurt on a quiet night.
- Carry a triangle in front of you. Holding one up toward approaching traffic as you walk makes you visible at the moment you are most exposed.
- Walk on the shoulder, facing traffic. Never walk in the lane, and keep watching what is coming toward you rather than looking down at where the triangle goes.
- Never stand between the truck and traffic. If a vehicle drifts onto the shoulder, the space between it and your trailer is the worst place to be.
- Your life comes before the triangles. If the truck is stopped in a live lane of a busy interstate and walking back is genuinely unsafe, stay protected, call 911 and tell them where you are. Put the triangles out when it can be done safely.
Two cautions and one exception
If fuel or a flammable load is leaking, do not use fusees or liquid-burning flares anywhere near it. Reflective triangles exist precisely so there is a warning device that cannot start a fire, and a spill is the moment they matter most.
The regulation also has narrow exceptions, most notably inside the business or residential district of a town where street lighting already makes a stopped truck clearly visible. Those exceptions do not apply to the dark shoulder of an interstate or a rural highway, which is where most breakdowns happen, so the safe assumption is that the full rule applies. Once the triangles are out
With the flashers on and the triangles placed, get yourself somewhere safe — ideally behind a guardrail or well off the shoulder, never standing beside the traffic side of the truck — and make the call. Leave the triangles where they are until the service truck or the wrecker has arrived, set up in position and turned on its own warning lights. The minutes between your triangles coming in and the recovery lights going on are minutes when nothing is warning traffic, so the triangles are the last thing collected, not the first. If you reach for the triangle case and find it missing or broken, treat that as something to fix before the truck goes out again, not just an inconvenience on the day. Commercial trucks are required to carry warning devices, and three bidirectional reflective triangles are the standard set. Fusees or liquid-burning flares are a permitted alternative in most situations, but never near spilled fuel or a flammable load, which is exactly why reflective triangles are the better thing to keep on board.
