Paola is the county seat, centered on Paola Park Square, where the Victorian gazebo stands near a bust of founders Baptiste Peoria and Mary Ann Isaacs. West Wea Street runs along the square, and Old Kansas City Road leads north from town to K-68. Bull Creek passes just west of Paola, Lake Miola offers camping and water recreation, and the Miami County Fair comes to town each July.
Osawatomie lies between the Marais des Cygnes River on its north side and Pottawatomie Creek on its south, on US-169 and K-7. From the Paola side, 327th Street becomes 6th Street at the city limits and leaves south as Plum Creek Road, signed K-7. The state mental hospital, reached by the old Asylum Bridge, and the John Brown Museum State Historic Site are its landmarks. A marker north of 343rd Street, east of Columbia Road, shows how high the river rose in the 1951 flood.
